Another day, another fallen empire

Updated: Feb 22, 2019

Lamanai, Belize - Maya city of the classical period, located between the great metropolis of Tikal, Guatemala and the sea. Took a 25-mile river trip to get here. Below is one of many ceremonial buildings.

The Maya built new structures on top of old ones, so the archeologists simply peeled below the jungle-reclaimed outer temple to an older version underneath. The reclaimed stones were used to make walkways. Talk about recycling!
